Tony Hinde has always had a fascination for woods and forests cultivated by a childhood spent in the countryside surrounding West Linton in the Scottish Borders. He joined the Forestry Commission on leaving school and after finishing his training spent 2 years on sabbatical in the jungles of Malaysia. On returning to Scotland and the Forestry Commission he spent 25 years working as their wildlife and conservation officer for the North of Scotland.
In 1996 he decided to take early retirement from the Commission and concentrate on working with wood, particularly in conjunction with mirror-glass. His life-long love of the unspoilt countryside in the sparsely populated Highlands of Scotland has been the inspiration behind the work he produces. In the abundant fields, forests and on the shores of remote lochs he searches for pieces of beautifully shaped dead wood, grown in a previous century, to bring back to his workshop, to live again in art and beauty.
Tony and his wife Annie live and work at their home south of Nairn. Here they welcome visitors to their country studio to view the most recent work of handcrafted wood framed mirrors and mirror sculptures that Tony has enjoyed creating.
